Agriculture Lighting

As any other industry, the agriculture needs a proper illumination in order to cultivate animals and plant the best way possible. Agriculture lighting is very important, especially for indoors. LED agriculture lights are becoming more popular every day as they save a lot of energy while provide a better light quality.

In farms, LED grow lights are replacing the old illumination because they also don’t emit UV radiation which affects negatively to the plants and animals.

Horticultural Lights

It’s proved that with the right illumination, the plants grow faster and with the same nutrients as with natural light, in horticultural led lighting is very common to see grow lighting with different colors: mainly blue and red. This is because they provide benefits depending on the growing stage of the plants.

Why use Blue and Red color as LED Grow Lights?

White light is made combining all the colors from the rainbow, and the major colors are Red, Green and Blue. Most of the plants look green to our eyes because they don’t absorb the green light so it gets reflected. But the blue light has a very important factor as it is directly related with the chlorophyll production. Plants that get enough blue light, will grow with strong and healthy stems and leaves. On the other side, the red light makes the plants flower and produce fruit; also, it’s very important for the early stages of the plant’s life as it help the seed germination, root growth and bulb development.

Furthermore, LED Lights offer a much better light uniformity, so all the plants will get equal light, and lower consumption which led agriculture induction lighting to a second place and now the industry is changing to LED grow lights in most of the agricultural lighting systems.

This change is not only helping the plants to grow healthier and faster, is also helping the planet as they use less energy and produce less heat.

In many cases, the collection is during the night or in cloudy days and if is an outdoor space, it can be an issue as there is no visibility. To solve this issue, there can be installed some LED Flood Lights in a tractor so there is a mobile lighting point. Tractor lighting are very useful in these scenarios as well as in construction places.

The most common lighting fixtures of our catalogue that help horticultural lighting are:

a. Recession Lights

b. Strip Lights

c. Legion Flood Light

Besides the horticultural lights, LED farming lights are a key factor to have the proper illumination all over the farm, as it can have also living animals. When there are living animals, indoor farming lights have to be installed in higher places to no create problems with the heat and don’t create vision problems to the animals

Dairy Barn Lighting

An adequate illumination will not only improve the productivity of the workers, it may increase also the productivity of lactating cows. Cows with 16-18 daily hours of light will increase their productivity by 5% to 16% compared with the ones with an average of 13.5 hours of light per day. This means that using led barn lights will save you money in the energy bill and will improve the productivity of the cows increasing the benefits.

The recommended illumination levels are represented in the following Table:

Agriculture lux level requirement

Foot-candle is a unit the measure the lighting levels of one area. Another unit is the Lux: 1 Foot-candle = 10.7639 Lux.

The places where the cow lights have to be more intense are in the washing area, the bulk tank interior and the surgery area. Those areas require around 100 foot-candles (~1100 lux).

To get this illumination levels it can be enough to use our 100W LED Flood Lights or High Bays.

In the following link you can find the history of the owners of Majestic Manor Dairy, a 120-cow registered Holstein enterprise near Davenport, Iowa, who decided to switch their cattle shed lighting into LED and obtained amazing results: www.dairyherd.com

It is important to realize that an unsuitable light levels or lighting regimen can affect the health cows as they could get stressed.

Another use for agriculture lights, is to install them in chicken coops. The reproductive cycle of a chicken is stimulated by light, and chickens need 14-16 hours of light each day to maintain peak egg production. Not all regions of the world can have these hours of light without using artificial lamps, especially in winter when the days shorten. The chicken are delicate animals so you have to consider a few factors before you install any chicken coop lighting:

a. Don’t use artificial light with chickens with less than 20 weeks of life.

b. Don’t make sudden changes in the light-time of your chickens, increase gradually the lighting hours slowly, for example add 30 extra minutes of light every week.

Don’t use more than 16-17 hours of light as they can get stressed and the results will be negative.

The illumination is very important but is a very delicate aspect as providing high light levels during long periods can produce negative consequences in either plants and animals. We recommend to study the needs of the farm before installing agriculture lights to avoid problems, especially when treating with animals.
