Rugby Field Lighting

Lighting rugby stadiums fields should be carried out in accordance with established regulations. There are a number of standards in sports coverage – they regulate the requirements for the coverage of the rugby fields.

In Europe, on the basis of the European standard EN 12193: 1999 for the different classes of games are regulated by the various levels of illumination rugby fields. When illuminated rugby stadiums used mast, linear or mixed systems.

Mast systems are widely spread, mainly in embodiment 4 using supports mounted on the corners of the pitch. Practice shows that in this case the basic lighting requirements can be implemented; however, the system has inherent disadvantages: because limit glare of spotlights require high masts. Depending on the location of their height, they can reach 80 meters or more, which significantly increases the cost of construction. The disadvantage of the system is the presence of 4 shadows to illuminate objects (athletes, sports equipment). Therefore, a 4-mast lighting system for use in conjunction with groups of floodlights mounted on the visor, supports other building elements and serve to improve the quality indicators of the rugby field lighting.

The transition to more searchlight towers (6,8 and more lighting columns) simplifies the task of getting the regulated parameters of lighting, but increases the cost of lighting the football stadium. Such a method is used in the lighting of small sports grounds, where the height of the masts is small.

Linear football lighting systems include the installation of floodlights along the long sides of the field on the visor above the stands, or on specially provided for this purpose designs. Solid or made up of separate groups of projectors line ensures the desired visual conditions and requirements of television. The depth of the shadows in the system also decreases. The limiting condition is the placement of lights and the glare produced. The disadvantages of this system include high cost lighting installations.

In the design of each of these lighting systems must be avoided on the shadows of the peaks stands.

Many believe that rugby was born in 1823 when William Webb Ellis “with fine disregard for the rules of football (note that football was yet to split into the various codes) as played in his time at Rugby school, first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of the Rugby game”.

Although this is in fact apocryphal, since there is little in the way of evidence to substantiate this view, it is however the popular view. So much so in fact that the international committee named the Rugby world cup the “William Webb Ellis Trophy”.

Various early ball games were played during the middle ages (5th to 16th century) and are sometimes referred to as folk football, mob football or Shrove tide football. Such games would usually be played between neighboring towns and villages, involving an unlimited number of players on opposing teams, who would fight and struggle to move an inflated pig’s bladder by any means possible to markers at each end of a town. Authorities would later attempt to outlaw such dangerous and unproductive pastimes.

Some of these games still exist in the United Kingdom to this day:

a. Alnwick in Northumberland: the game survives and begins with the Duke of Northumberland dropping a ball from the battlements of Alnwick Castle.

b. Ashbourne in Derbyshire (known as Royal Shrove tide Football)

c. Atherstone in Warwickshire

Ace Flood LED Light
